Viktor Gyökeres is not walking into Sweden’s World Cup knockout match with any illusions. The forward has said plainly that Sweden needs to be “almost perfect defensively” to have any realistic chance against France in their Round of 32 fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
What Gyökeres actually said, and why it matters
The match is scheduled following the conclusion of the group stage on June 29, 2026, as part of the expanded 48-team tournament hosted across North America.
Sweden qualified for the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams. The striker’s hat-tricks during the European qualifying play-offs put the country in the tournament in the first place.
France, Mbappé, and the challenge Sweden is walking into
France arrives at this fixture as one of the tournament favorites, and their attack features Kylian Mbappé. Sweden’s path through this match also features an individual duel with France’s defenders, including Gyökeres’ Arsenal colleague William Saliba.
Sweden has historically punched above its weight at major tournaments. The 2018 World Cup run to the quarterfinals, where they eliminated Mexico and Switzerland before losing to England, showed what a well-organized Swedish side can do when the defensive structure is right.
That 2018 squad did not have a forward of Gyökeres’ caliber. This one does, which cuts both ways. Sweden has more individual attacking quality now, but they also arguably depend more heavily on one player to create and convert.
The expanded 2026 format, with its 48 teams and additional round, has given sides like Sweden more runway to build momentum. Reaching the knockout stage as a third-placed team is no longer the ceiling.
