Tesla just went from operating 10 autonomous vehicles in Nevada to being approved for 5,000. That’s a 500x expansion in operational ceiling, granted in roughly a month. The Nevada Transportation Authority approved Tesla Robotaxi LLC’s permit for a Full Autonomous Vehicle Network, covering all of Clark County, which includes Las Vegas. The 12-month permit replaces an interim authorization from late July 2026 that capped Tesla at just 10 vehicles with restrictions on geography, speed, and airport access. Those guardrails are now gone. From testing permit to full-scale authorization Tesla’s Nevada journey started in September 2025, when it secured a testing permit from the Nevada DMV. The interim permit in late July 2026 functioned as a proof-of-concept phase designed to let regulators observe Tesla’s Full Self-Driving technology under controlled conditions. The new permit grants Tesla the operational flexibility to deploy across the entire county, including access to the airport corridor. Worth noting: 5,000 is a ceiling, not a deployment target.
