Shopify wants building an online store to feel less like hiring a developer and more like texting one. On October 1, 2026, the company unveiled Canvas, a visual design workspace where merchants shape their storefronts by chatting with Sidekick, Shopify’s AI commerce assistant. Every change shows up in real time, so merchants can see exactly what the AI did before deciding whether they like it. The pitch is speed. According to Shopify’s Ben Sehl, creating a fully custom store now takes around 20 minutes instead of two weeks of coding. What Canvas actually does Think of Canvas as a giant whiteboard with your whole website pinned to it. Instead of clicking through pages one by one in a traditional editor, merchants see all of their store’s pages laid out together in a single view. From there, they can pan and zoom across layouts the way you would move around a digital map. They can also make edits directly on the page. The technical trick is live rendering from the store’s theme code. Theme code is the underlying template that controls how a Shopify store looks and behaves.
