Individual Bitcoin holders flipped from aggressive sellers to aggressive buyers in Q3 2026, scooping up more than 107,000 BTC in what River Financial calls the fastest pace of retail accumulation in years. The reversal is dramatic. Across Q1 and Q2 2026 combined, individuals were net sellers of roughly 140,000 BTC. Now they’ve clawed back most of that in a single quarter, with Bitcoin trading in the mid-$80,000s as of River’s September 18 report. From capitulation to conviction River Financial, which has published quarterly ownership-change analyses going back to 2019, tracks how Bitcoin shifts between different holder categories: individuals, businesses, funds, and unidentified wallets. In Q2 2026, the pattern was clear. Businesses added roughly 115,000 BTC while individuals offloaded about 78,000 BTC. Retail holders were essentially handing their coins to corporate treasuries and institutional funds, a dynamic that had persisted through much of the year. The timing matters.
