Qualcomm renews global licensing pact with Apple starting April 2027

Qualcomm just secured what might be the most lucrative insurance policy in tech. The chipmaker announced it has renewed its global patent license agreement with Apple, effective April 1, 2027, extending a relationship that generates an estimated $8 to $9 in royalties for every device Apple ships. Qualcomm’s licensing segment accounts for roughly 15% of total revenue, but it punches well above its weight on margins, making this renewal a financial anchor for the company even as its chip sales to Apple shrink. From courtroom rivals to contractual partners In 2017, Apple sued Qualcomm, alleging the company was overcharging for patent licenses and using its dominant position to extract unfair terms. Qualcomm countersued. Then, in April 2019, the two companies abruptly settled. The deal included a six-year patent license agreement and a multi-year chip supply arrangement.
