OpenAI urges US to lead global standards for AI safety

OpenAI is making its clearest play yet for American leadership in AI governance, publishing a blog post on September 21 calling on the US to spearhead the creation of global technical standards for frontier AI systems. The timing is not subtle: CEO Sam Altman is scheduled to address the UN Security Council on September 23 to discuss AI and international security. The proposal focuses on three specific areas: recursive self-improvement, incident reporting protocols, and frameworks for how nations and international bodies should collaborate on AI oversight. What OpenAI is actually asking for Recursive self-improvement, or RSI, is one of the more unsettling concepts in AI development. It refers to AI systems that can improve their own capabilities without human intervention. OpenAI wants technical standards that address this phenomenon before it becomes a crisis management exercise rather than a policy discussion.
