Muneeb Ali, the co-founder of the Stacks protocol, is becoming CEO of Stacks Labs, the entity responsible for steering core protocol development and ecosystem growth. A community vote held in July 2026 delivered roughly 99% support for staking upgrades within the Stacks ecosystem. What Stacks Labs actually is, and why it matters Stacks Labs was formed in 2025 following community approval of SIP-031, a governance proposal that formalized the organization’s role in overseeing protocol development, developer relations, and ecosystem expansion. With around 33 employees operating globally, it is a lean outfit relative to the ambitions it is pursuing. The core product underlying those ambitions is sBTC, a decentralized asset pegged to Bitcoin that allows BTC holders to participate in DeFi activities without wrapping their coins through a centralized custodian.
