Metaplanet just made its clearest signal yet that it doesn’t want to be “Japan’s MicroStrategy” forever. The Tokyo-listed company is acquiring Siiibo Securities for 2.1 billion yen, roughly $13 million, in a deal that shifts its identity from passive Bitcoin hoarder to active Bitcoin-financial platform. The acquisition is the first major move under what Metaplanet calls “Project Nova,” a strategy to construct an entire Bitcoin-focused financial ecosystem within Japan’s regulated framework. What Metaplanet is actually building Siiibo Securities comes with something money can’t easily buy: a brokerage license. That license gives Metaplanet the regulatory green light to offer Bitcoin-linked investment products to Japanese investors through a proper, licensed channel. Instead of just holding Bitcoin and hoping the stock price tracks it, Metaplanet wants to build yield products around Bitcoin and sell them directly. The company currently holds 2,235 BTC after its most recent purchase of 135 BTC for approximately $13 million.
