Meta and Microsoft, two of Anthropic’s largest enterprise customers, have sharply reduced how much their own employees use Claude. The pullback has played out across 2026 and centers on Claude Code, Anthropic’s AI coding tool. The numbers behind the pullback The shift was detailed in a report by The Information on October 5, 2026. At Meta, internal Claude Code users dropped from roughly 60,000 at the start of the year to about 30,000. Many moved to Meta’s own tools. MetaCode now has more than 30,000 users, while Muse Code counts more than 6,000. Meta spent over $105 million on Claude Code during a recent 28-day period, a figure that captures how deep the dependency ran before tighter controls arrived. Microsoft’s story follows a similar arc. The company had projected its annual internal spending on Anthropic would exceed $1 billion. That projection has since been cut by over a third. Monthly budgets were reduced from $100,000 to about $10,000. Microsoft is steering internal work toward GitHub Copilot CLI and OpenAI models instead.
