Jay Clayton, former SEC chair, set to become America’s top spy on Monday

Jay Clayton, the lawyer who ran the SEC during some of crypto’s most formative years, is about to start a very different job. Bill Pulte, the acting Director of National Intelligence, announced that Clayton will officially take over as America’s top intelligence official on Monday, August 3. The Senate confirmed Clayton to the role on July 28 in a razor-thin 51-47 vote along party lines. It caps a nomination process that began on June 11 when President Trump tapped him to succeed Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned from the position earlier this year. From Wall Street cop to spymaster Clayton served as SEC Chairman from 2017 to 2020, then became US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. CIA Director John Ratcliffe reportedly recommended Clayton for the DNI role, which coordinates all 18 agencies in the intelligence community. The transition comes after Pulte’s brief and turbulent stint as acting DNI.
