Isabel Schnabel, one of the European Central Bank’s most influential voices on inflation, will step down from the ECB’s Executive Board to become the IMF’s Financial Counsellor and Director of its Monetary and Capital Markets Department. The move takes effect in January 2027, nearly a full year before her ECB term was set to expire. Schnabel’s departure fills a vacancy left by Tobias Adrian, who resigned from the IMF position at the end of August 2026. A leadership exodus in Frankfurt Chief Economist Philip Lane is set to depart in May 2027. President Christine Lagarde’s term runs out by October 2027. Adding Schnabel’s early exit to that timeline means the ECB will cycle through three of its most senior figures within roughly ten months. Schnabel’s ECB term began on January 1, 2020, placing her squarely in the cockpit during some of the most turbulent years in recent central banking history.
