Irish gangs are renting private vaults to stash crypto keys alongside cash and Rolexes

Organized crime in Ireland has found an analog solution to a digital problem. Instead of trying to obscure crypto holdings with mixers or privacy coins, gangs are simply locking hardware wallets, seed phrases, and private keys inside rented private vaults, right next to the cash, luxury watches, and fake passports. Ireland’s Criminal Assets Bureau, the agency responsible for seizing criminal proceeds, says this storage method is becoming a go-to tactic for groups trying to keep their digital wealth out of law enforcement’s reach. Old-school vaults, new-school assets The strategy is deceptively simple. Crypto assets themselves live on blockchains, visible to anyone who knows where to look. But without the private keys or recovery phrases, those assets are untouchable. By stashing the physical materials needed to access wallets inside rented security boxes, criminals create a gap between what investigators can see on-chain and what they can actually seize.
