Iran has seized a tanker owned by the United Arab Emirates in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report from Fars News Agency, the Iranian state media outlet. The incident marks another flashpoint in what has become an increasingly volatile stretch of water, one that roughly 20% of all global oil trade passes through on any given day. A pattern, not an isolated event This seizure doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It’s the latest in a string of Iranian actions targeting UAE-linked vessels in 2026, a year that has turned the Strait of Hormuz into something closer to a contested military zone than an international shipping lane. Earlier this year, in May, Iranian forces seized a vessel off Fujairah that was heading toward Iranian waters. Then in August, the situation escalated sharply.
