IonQ shares surged roughly 10% on September 17 after the quantum computing company revealed that a collaboration with Synopsys had produced measurable speed improvements in complex engineering simulations. A hybrid quantum-classical workflow integrated into Synopsys’ widely used Ansys LS-DYNA simulation software delivered runtime reductions between 5.9% and 14.6% across multiple real-world engineering models. The research won the 1st Place Best Paper Award at IEEE Quantum Week 2026. What actually happened under the hood IonQ and Synopsys tested their hybrid approach on four distinct models: an automobile, an industrial drill component, a fluid impeller, and a jet engine assembly. The quantum algorithm handled data organization and eliminated unnecessary calculations before handing the problem off to classical solvers. The meshes involved contained up to 35 million data points. All of this ran on IonQ’s 36-qubit Forte trapped-ion system, which the company says can scale to approximately 150 qubits. Dr. Martin Roetteler from IonQ pointed to the significant reductions in simulation times as evidence that hybrid quantum methods are ready for commercial relevance. Prith Banerjee from Sy...
