Jack Butland is heading back to England. The veteran goalkeeper has completed a move from Rangers to Hull City, ending a three-year spell at Ibrox that saw him rack up over 150 appearances for the Scottish giants.
The deal, reportedly worth £3 million, is part of a broader goalkeeper reshuffle between the two clubs. Croatian shot-stopper Ivor Pandur is heading in the opposite direction, joining Rangers for around £6 million.
The details of the deal
Butland’s signing became official on July 1, 2026, bringing the 33-year-old back to English football for the first time since he left Crystal Palace in the summer of 2023. That Palace departure saw him head north of the border on a four-year contract with Rangers, where he quickly established himself as the club’s first-choice keeper.
Nine caps for the England national team sit on Butland’s resume.
Butland posted a farewell message on Instagram to Rangers supporters before making the switch.
For Rangers, the math here is interesting. They’re receiving £3 million for a 33-year-old goalkeeper while spending roughly £6 million on Pandur. The net spend of around £3 million buys them a generational reset between the posts.
Hull City’s promotion puzzle
Butland’s career trajectory includes an international debut at Birmingham City while still a teenager. A serious ankle injury in 2016 derailed that trajectory, and subsequent stints at Stoke City and Crystal Palace saw him struggle to recapture that early promise at the highest level.
At Rangers, Butland rediscovered his form and consistency, becoming one of the Scottish Premiership’s most reliable goalkeepers across three seasons.
What this means for both clubs
For Rangers, the Pandur acquisition represents a clear philosophical shift. The £6 million outlay is significant by Scottish football standards, suggesting Rangers view the Croatian as considerably more than a stopgap.
