Global industrial robot stock reaches 5 million as humanoid hype quietly deflates

There are now more than 5 million industrial robots working in factories around the world, the highest number ever recorded. That milestone, reported in the International Federation of Robotics’ World Robotics 2026 report, lands at exactly the moment when the flashier corner of the robotics universe, humanoid machines, is running into a wall of commercial reality. The numbers behind the factory floor boom The IFR report covers the end of 2025, when global operational stock of industrial robots hit the 5 million mark after a 9% year-over-year increase. More than 600,000 new units were installed during the year, an 11% jump from 2024. China dominated the picture, accounting for 354,000 installations, or 59% of global deployments. That’s a 20% increase from the prior year, and Chinese domestic suppliers now claim 55% of their home market. The US quietly leapfrogged Japan to become the world’s second-largest market, logging roughly 38,500 installations, a 12% increase. Japan, by contrast, saw installations fall 19% to 36,219 units.
