Multiple European football associations, including England, Wales, Finland, and Serbia, have pulled their endorsements of his re-election bid, turning what was once a lock for 2027 into something resembling a political free fall. How Infantino lost the room The unraveling started with a proposal Infantino floated in early August 2026 to invite private investment into World Cup-related ventures. The plan lasted roughly 24 hours. UEFA, the European football confederation representing 55 national associations, responded with threats of a potential boycott of FIFA events, and Infantino pulled the proposal back almost immediately. Wales’ Football Association was the first to formally withdraw its endorsement on August 3, 2026, acting as the catalyst for a chain reaction.
