FIFA has rolled out a package of rule changes for the 2026 World Cup designed to keep the ball in play and the theatrics to a minimum. The headline change: any outfield player who receives medical treatment on the field must immediately leave the pitch and wait at least one minute after play resumes before returning.
The one-minute off-pitch requirement applies to outfield players only. Goalkeepers, players who suffer severe injuries, and those involved in collisions are exempt from the mandate.
Early returns from the rule’s implementation have been encouraging, according to FIFA. Players are reportedly spending considerably less time on the ground, and matches are flowing more smoothly as a result. Less play-acting, quicker recoveries from genuine knocks, and reduced overall stoppage time have all been observed.
The concept isn’t entirely new. The Premier League previously experimented with a 30-second wait rule, requiring treated players to briefly exit before rejoining. FIFA’s version doubles the waiting period and applies it to the sport’s biggest stage, the World Cup, which kicks off across venues in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
FIFA has also introduced five-second countdowns for goal kicks and throw-ins. There’s also a new restriction on players covering their mouths during confrontations with opponents or officials.
The 2026 World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams, up from the traditional 32, spread across three host nations.
