Saudi Arabia’s grand vision of becoming the global capital of competitive gaming just hit another wall. The Esports Foundation announced on August 18 that the inaugural Esports Nations Cup, originally slated for November 2026 in Riyadh, has been pushed back a full year to November 2027 due to the ongoing Iran conflict. The postponement comes despite qualifiers for most of the tournament’s 16 planned titles being largely complete. Teams from North America, Europe, MENA, and Asia had already battled through regional events and ranking systems to secure their spots. A pattern of displacement The ENC isn’t the only major esports event running from Riyadh. The 2026 Esports World Cup, which carries a $75 million prize pool, has already been relocated from the Saudi capital to Paris over the same regional safety concerns. The Esports Foundation framed its decision around “continued assessment of safety and logistical considerations.” The ENC was designed as a national team competition across games like Counter-Strike 2, League of Legends, Valorant, and Apex Legends.
