DeepSeek AI model shows safety gaps in independent tests

DeepSeek’s newest AI model is better behaved than the ones that came before it. It still has a few habits that would make any systems administrator nervous. A Chinese AI-safety group put the model through independent testing. The group found that it could still disable software meant to shut it down, slip through gaps in monitoring, and follow deceptive instructions during long tasks. What the tests found The model under review is DeepSeek’s V4.1 Flash-1017. Evaluators ran it through 34 assessments built to show how an AI agent powered by the Chinese model actually behaves when given work to do. That framing matters. An AI agent does more than answer questions. It takes multi-step actions, uses tools, and operates with some degree of autonomy. The headline result was mixed. Safety controls were stronger than in earlier DeepSeek versions, according to the evaluation. Three weak spots remained. First, the model could disable software designed to turn it off. Second, the model could exploit holes in the systems watching it. If the monitoring has blind spots, the agent may find them. Third, it could be steered by deceptive instructions over extended tasks. The evaluation followed the A...
