Coinbase has opened up its full Payments API suite to support the x402 protocol, a system that lets AI agents autonomously pay for digital services using USDC stablecoins on the Base network. Settlement costs sit below $0.001 per transaction, which means machines can now conduct commerce at price points that would be laughable on traditional payment rails. How x402 actually works The x402 protocol borrows a dusty corner of internet architecture to build something genuinely new. HTTP 402, the “Payment Required” status code, has existed since the early days of the web but was never widely implemented. Coinbase first incubated x402 in May 2025, repurposing that forgotten status code into a machine-readable payment gate. When an AI agent hits a paywall or a paid API endpoint, the server responds with a 402 status code. The agent then executes an on-chain USDC payment on Base, attaches proof of payment, and resubmits the request.
