Chelsea assesses Mudryk’s reintegration ahead of transfer deadline

Chelsea FC is running an unusual experiment this pre-season: figuring out whether a player who cost up to €100 million can still, well, play top-level football after nearly two years away from competitive matches. Mykhailo Mudryk, the Ukrainian winger whose career was frozen by a doping ban, is back in training. The club and his representatives have until September 1 to decide what comes next. The timeline and the stakes Mudryk signed for Chelsea in January 2023 for a reported fee of up to €100 million, roughly £89 million. That made him one of the most expensive transfers in Premier League history at the time. Then everything stopped. A four-year ban imposed by the Football Association, in conjunction with World Anti-Doping Agency proceedings, pulled him out of competitive football starting in late 2024. His last appearance in a match was November 2024. The ban was cleared on July 31, 2026, allowing an immediate return. Mudryk joined Chelsea’s pre-season tour in Hong Kong and completed his first training session in early August 2026.
