BitMEX shuts down as analysts warn of accelerating crypto consolidation

BitMEX, the exchange that essentially taught crypto how to trade derivatives, is calling it quits. Parent company HDR Global Trading Limited announced the platform will permanently shut down at 04:00 UTC on September 23, 2026, following what it described as a strategic review. The closure caps a long, painful decline for a platform that once dominated leveraged crypto trading. As of July 2026, BitMEX’s daily trading volume sits at roughly $400,000, representing less than 0.01% of overall market share. From pioneer to footnote Founded in 2014 by Arthur Hayes, Benjamin Delo, and Samuel Reed, BitMEX was genuinely revolutionary. It introduced perpetual swap contracts to crypto, a product that went on to become the single most traded instrument in digital asset markets. It offered up to 100x leverage at a time when most of the industry was still figuring out spot trading. Then came the regulators. In 2020, the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Department of Justice charged the founders with violating anti-money laundering laws.
