West Ham United has appointed Nils Koppen as its new director of player recruitment, bringing in the 39-year-old Dutch executive to overhaul the club’s scouting and transfer pipeline. The move, finalized in late June 2026 after Koppen secured a UK work permit, represents one of the most significant off-pitch hires the London club has made in recent memory.
From PSV to Rangers to London
Koppen’s resume reads like a European football tour. He spent nearly six years at PSV Eindhoven from 2018 to January 2024, building a reputation as one of the sharper scouting minds in the Eredivisie. His work there involved identifying and securing high-profile signings that kept PSV competitive at the top of Dutch football.
From Eindhoven, he moved to Rangers, where he served first as head of scouting before being elevated to technical director. He held that role until July 2025, a period during which the Glasgow club cycled through various on-pitch strategies while trying to close the gap with Celtic.
His stint at FC Copenhagen was brief, lasting only a few months from March 2026. But brevity at one club often signals that a bigger opportunity came calling, and West Ham clearly represented exactly that. The work permit hearing around June 27–28 was the final bureaucratic hurdle, and once cleared, the deal was done.
How the role fits West Ham’s structure
This isn’t a football czar appointment. Koppen’s remit is specifically player recruitment, meaning he won’t be overseeing the entire football operation at the club.
He’ll work alongside head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, sporting director Mark Noble, and the West Ham board. His collaborative responsibilities extend to contract renewals, academy development, and player sales, but the power structure keeps him focused on player recruitment.
The appointment followed what the club described as a thorough interview process involving senior leadership.
