After one of the more impressive sector runs in recent memory, Wells Fargo Investment Institute has decided the technology trade deserves a second look. The firm downgraded the S&P 500 Information Technology sector from favorable to neutral, closing a chapter on an outlook it had held since April 2026. The timing matters. From April 6 to September 29, the S&P 500 Information Technology Index climbed 37%, more than doubling the broader S&P 500’s 16% gain over the same stretch. Why Wells Fargo is pumping the brakes The institute’s concern rests on three interlocking problems. First, valuations have stretched to levels that leave little cushion for disappointment. Second, investor expectations have climbed alongside prices, meaning any stumble in earnings or guidance hits harder than it would in a more modestly priced sector. Third, and perhaps most structurally important, tech companies have been leaning heavily on debt markets to fund AI infrastructure buildouts.
