The crypto industry has a new security crisis, and it has nothing to do with smart contract exploits or phishing links. It involves actual physical violence. CertiK documented 52 verified “wrench attacks,” the industry’s term for physically coercing someone into handing over their crypto, during the first half of 2026. That’s a 33.3% increase from the 39 incidents recorded during the same period in 2025. The financial toll is far more jarring: $124.1 million in total exposure, more than 11 times the $10.5 million from H1 2025. The attack method has also shifted in a disturbing direction. Home invasions linked to crypto theft surged from just 1 case in H1 2025 to 20 cases in H1 2026. Chainalysis, in its broader 2026 Crypto Crime Report, flagged a growing connection between physical violence and on-chain activity.
