US officials want to know how Nvidia missed the warning signs. Restricted AI chips keep ending up in China, and Washington is asking why the company that makes them didn’t notice. The questions follow a Bloomberg investigation published October 1, 2026. It detailed red flags that Nvidia’s oversight mechanisms apparently failed to catch, including surveillance imagery that captured labels being stripped off servers. A string of indictments The most recent case came the same day as the Bloomberg report. On October 1, 2026, US authorities arrested Greg Lui, a California resident, on charges of conspiracy, smuggling, and money laundering. Prosecutors allege Lui trafficked over $300 million in servers equipped with Nvidia AI chips to China between 2023 and 2024. Lui’s case is not an isolated one. In March 2026, the Department of Justice indicted three individuals linked to Super Micro Computer, a major server maker. That case centered on an alleged scheme to falsely route approximately $510 million in Nvidia-loaded servers to China.
