US lawmakers probe CXMT’s IPO over national security concerns as crypto markets offer parallel trading

ChangXin Memory Technologies just became China’s most valuable listed company. Washington would really prefer that hadn’t happened. CXMT, China’s largest DRAM chipmaker and by some estimates the world’s fourth-largest, raised approximately 57.92 billion yuan (roughly $8.6 billion) in its July 2026 IPO on Shanghai’s STAR Market. Shares were priced at 8.66 yuan each before exploding 466% on their first day of trading, pushing the company’s market capitalization above $487 billion. A senior federal official told the New York Post there is “a real suspicion that a Chinese Communist Party intervention played a role in this so-called IPO.” The national security angle CXMT isn’t just another chipmaker going public. It sits at the center of China’s aggressive push for semiconductor self-sufficiency, a strategic priority that has only intensified as Washington tightens export controls on advanced chip technology.
