The United States and Canada held last-minute trade talks ahead of a Wednesday deadline for President Donald Trump’s planned 50% tariffs on selected Canadian goods.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said negotiations were intense and delicate. His office said he and Trump spoke by phone Monday about the talks.
The duties are scheduled to take effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time on Aug. 19 and cover about $20 billion in Canadian products, including vehicles, alcoholic beverages and dairy goods.
Trump ordered the tariffs under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, arguing that Canadian policies discriminate against US exports. The US Trade Representative has said Washington remains open to negotiations.
Canada has said it is seeking a broader trade agreement but is prepared to respond if the new US measures take effect. Neither government had announced a deal by Tuesday.
