United States imposes new sanctions on Lebanese officials linked to Hezbollah

The US government is doubling down on its decades-long effort to choke off Hezbollah’s financial and political networks, re-designating the Iran-backed group as a terrorist organization while rolling out a fresh wave of sanctions targeting Lebanese officials accused of enabling its operations. A sanctions campaign in stages On May 21, the Treasury Department sanctioned nine Lebanese officials, including sitting members of parliament and security personnel, for their roles in obstructing peace processes and propping up Hezbollah’s grip on Lebanese state institutions. On June 18, Treasury followed up with additional sanctions targeting more Lebanese officials and members of a previously sanctioned business network. The targets were accused of enabling Hezbollah’s operations and actively blocking disarmament efforts within Lebanon. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been vocal about the rationale, repeatedly affirming the need for Hezbollah to be fully disarmed.
