Turkey’s financial sector just had its worst week in years, and the handcuffs are coming out. Authorities detained Tera Holding Chairman Emre Tezmen and several board members on September 19, with detention warrants also issued for Pusula Holding Chairman Serdar Turhan as part of a sprawling investigation into suspected ponzi-like fund schemes. The scale is staggering. Turkey’s Capital Markets Board, known as the SPK, has ordered the liquidation of approximately 130 investment funds valued at around $18.3 billion. Travel bans and asset freezes have been slapped on 51 individuals connected to the targeted financial companies. What happened in Turkey’s markets The crisis traces back to alarming patterns of suspicious trading activity that prompted the SPK to file formal complaints. What followed was a cascade of investor panic, mass redemptions, and liquidity crises that left some of the country’s largest funds unable to meet withdrawal requests. Two Tera funds alone reportedly faced redemption defaults totaling roughly $7.5 billion.
