Turkey transfers 70 ATACMS missiles to Ukraine in $300M weapons package pending congressional review

The US State Department notified Congress on August 6 of Turkey’s proposal to permanently transfer a substantial cache of American-made weaponry to Ukraine. The package is valued at roughly $300M and includes some of the most sought-after munitions in Kyiv’s arsenal. At the center of the deal: 70 M39 ATACMS ballistic missiles. Turkey originally acquired them for about $28M. Beyond the ATACMS, the transfer includes 12 M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) launchers, 2,524 M26 DPICM cluster munitions, and 47,000 M509A1 203 mm DPICM artillery shells. The M39 ATACMS variant carries submunitions and has a range of approximately 165 kilometers, or about 100 miles. Ukraine has already been using earlier ATACMS variants supplied directly by Washington since late 2023. The logistics chain for the transfer involves a mix of Turkish, Bulgarian, and American defense firms. Turkish company MKE A.S. is handling the seller side, while US entities Pansophico and Patriot Defense Group are managing the transaction’s compliance and logistics framework.
