Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on August 3, 2026 with a message that was equal parts geopolitical forecast and consumer advocacy. He predicted oil prices would fall once the US wraps up its business with Iran, and in the same breath told ExxonMobil and Chevron to cut retail gasoline prices immediately. The post read: “get your consumer (retail!) Oil Prices DOWN, NOW.” Chevron CEO Mike Wirth was specifically called out by name. Big oil, bigger profits, very bad timing ExxonMobil posted $14.53 billion in profit for Q2 2026, more than double its year-over-year result. Chevron reported $12.07 billion for the same period, nearly five times its year-ago figure. Those numbers landed while American drivers were paying an average of $4.10 per gallon as of August 1, 2026. Crude oil itself had been running around $96 per barrel, driven up by months of US-Iran conflict that began in late February 2026 and included military strikes and at least one ceasefire.
