The United States has a minerals problem. Defense systems, semiconductors, and electric vehicles all depend on a narrow list of raw materials, and a significant portion of global supply runs through China. President Trump is scheduled to host a roundtable with top mining executives on August 7, 2026, bringing together leaders from major firms including Rio Tinto, BHP, and Freeport-McMoRan to discuss how domestic and allied mineral production can be accelerated. What the administration is actually trying to do In February, Trump announced a $12 billion initiative to build a national mineral stockpile, a reserve designed to cushion the US economy and military against sudden supply disruptions, the mineral equivalent of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Then in July 2026, an executive order went further, restricting defense contractors from obtaining waivers that allow them to source critical minerals from prohibited foreign suppliers. In plain terms, if a defense firm was quietly buying materials from a sanctioned supply chain and getting a pass on it, that pass is now significantly harder to obtain.
