Tether is taking its flagship stablecoin back to where it started. USDT is set to return to the Bitcoin network with private transfers, direct BTC-USDT swaps, and loans backed by Bitcoin. The relaunch is planned for October 2026 through an infrastructure project called Utexo. After nearly a decade spent mostly on Ethereum and Tron, the world’s best-known stablecoin is heading home. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino announced the return on X in September 2026 with a short message. “It’s coming home.” What Utexo actually does Utexo was founded in 2025 and holds a commercial license from Tether to issue USDT on Bitcoin. The project raised $7.5 million in early 2026 to build out that infrastructure. The technical foundation combines two pieces: the RGB protocol and Bitcoin’s UTXO model. UTXO stands for “unspent transaction output.” Think of it as Bitcoin’s way of tracking money as individual bills in a wallet rather than as one running balance in a bank account.
