Switzerland takes lead against Qatar with Embolo penalty at 2026 World Cup

2 hours ago 4

Switzerland’s Breel Embolo scored from the penalty spot in the 18th minute to give his side the lead against Qatar in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group B opener in Santa Clara, California on June 13.

The penalty was awarded after Qatari goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada fouled Swiss midfielder Remo Freuler, with the referee confirming the call through a VAR review before pointing to the spot.

What happened on the pitch

Embolo stepped up and converted cleanly, marking his 24th goal in 86 international appearances for Switzerland.

The goal proved to be the match’s only score, giving Switzerland all three points in their tournament opener.

Embolo’s participation in the tournament wasn’t even guaranteed until recently. He received travel clearance to enter the United States on June 4, just nine days before kickoff, following a visa review tied to a 2018 incident that had complicated his ESTA authorization.

No crypto angle, and that itself is notable

This match carried zero connection to cryptocurrency, blockchain sponsorships, or tokenized platforms of any kind.

That’s worth noting because the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was practically wallpapered with crypto logos. Crypto.com served as an official sponsor. Algorand had a deal with FIFA. Fan token platforms like Socios ran aggressive campaigns around national team tokens.

The retreat mirrors a broader pullback in crypto sports sponsorships that began after the 2022 bear market. FTX’s collapse, which had its name on the Miami Heat’s arena, sent a chill through the entire sports sponsorship pipeline. Crypto.com, which had renamed the Staples Center in Los Angeles, has maintained that deal but hasn’t expanded aggressively into new sports properties at the same scale.
