Stripe just made it easier for software, not just people, to find businesses. The payments giant launched Stripe Directory in public preview, a searchable tool that lets developers and AI agents discover businesses operating within the Stripe network.
How Stripe Directory actually works
Stripe Directory pulls together information from several sources across the Stripe ecosystem. That includes public Stripe profiles, the Stripe App Marketplace, Projects.dev providers, and mpp.dev endpoints tied to the Tempo network.
The data it surfaces is structured and specific: pricing details, integration specifications, and service descriptions formatted for automated consumption. Developers can run searches directly from their terminal using the command stripe directory search, with an optional JSON output format for programmatic use.
Businesses only appear in Directory search results if they maintain a public Stripe profile and have opted to allow crawling. Anyone who doesn’t want to be discoverable can opt out through their privacy settings. Feedback on the tool can be directed to [email protected].
The Tempo connection and machine payments
Tempo’s mainnet launched on March 18, 2026, introducing the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), a framework designed specifically for autonomous payment agents to transact without human intervention.
The MPP already has its own directory listing over 100 services. Stripe Directory integrates with mpp.dev endpoints, meaning AI agents can not only discover businesses through Stripe but also tap into Tempo’s protocol for executing payments autonomously.
Why this matters for investors and the broader market
Despite the significance of this launch, major crypto-focused media outlets did not report on it extensively, indicating Stripe Directory is positioned more as a niche developer tool than a mainstream product release.
The MPP’s directory of over 100 services is a start, not a critical mass. If autonomous transactions don’t scale as quickly as Stripe is betting, Directory could remain a developer curiosity rather than a transformative product.
