Soccer players adopt high-tech cooling gear to combat heat during World Cup 2026

Playing elite soccer in a Miami summer is roughly the equivalent of running a marathon inside a car wash set to “steam.” Adidas thinks it has a fix.

The sportswear giant launched the CLIMACOOL SYSTEM on June 8, just days before the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicked off across North America. The three-part cooling kit, consisting of a pre-frozen gel vest, an insulating jacket, and an overshoe, is designed to keep players from overheating in cities where temperatures are expected to push well past 30°C.

Formula 1 tech meets the pitch

The underlying cooling technology was adapted from solutions developed for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 drivers, who routinely sit in cockpits that can exceed 50°C during races.

The gel vest alone can lower skin temperature by up to 13°C, which is a massive physiological advantage when you’re trying to maintain sprint speed in the 85th minute of a knockout match in Dallas.

The system works in layers. Players wear the frozen gel vest before matches and during halftime. The insulating jacket goes over it to maintain the cooling effect for longer. And the overshoe keeps feet from absorbing radiant heat off stadium surfaces that can be significantly hotter than the ambient air temperature.

Why the World Cup needs this now

The 2026 World Cup is being held across 16 cities in North America, with matches spread between the US, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament began June 11, which means peak summer conditions for venues like Miami, Dallas, and Monterrey.

All Adidas-partner football federations competing in the tournament will receive the CLIMACOOL SYSTEM. Saudi Arabia’s national team is already among those testing and utilizing the equipment as of mid-June 2026.

What this means for investors watching sports tech

It’s worth noting that this particular innovation has no connection to cryptocurrency or blockchain technology. While the 2026 World Cup does have crypto-adjacent sponsors, including Kraken as an official crypto exchange supporter, and fan token platforms like Chiliz remain active around the tournament, those are entirely separate lanes from what Adidas is doing with cooling gear.
