Shopify enables browser-based AI agents to complete purchases

Shopify just turned every storefront on its platform into an AI agent playground. On August 5, the company activated native WebMCP support across all Liquid storefronts and the Hydrogen developer preview, letting browser-based AI agents handle everything from product searches to checkout, no merchant setup required. How WebMCP actually works Instead of the approach where bots try to simulate mouse clicks and parse HTML, WebMCP creates a standardized set of tools that agents can call directly. The tools Shopify has exposed through WebMCP include functions like search_catalog, update_cart, and proceed_to_checkout. An AI agent running in your browser can now search a merchant’s entire product catalog, add items to your cart, apply discount codes, and update your shipping information, all through structured commands rather than screen-scraping hacks. The checkout capabilities come with guardrails that matter. AI agents can read and modify order details like contact information and discounts, but they cannot input payment credentials.
