Schwab highlights retail investors’ demand for affordable AI stocks

Charles Schwab is betting that retail investors don’t just want to talk about AI. They want to buy it, preferably without needing six figures to get meaningful exposure. The brokerage launched its first generative AI capability for self-directed retail clients on May 5, rolling it out across its website and app with plans to reach all US-based self-directed clients by the end of May. The tool is designed to surface portfolio performance insights, market news, and research commentary, essentially giving everyday investors a pocket analyst powered by large language models. The numbers behind the push Schwab’s timing isn’t accidental. A survey of nearly 1,000 of its retail clients found that over 60% expressed interest in using AI tools for their investments. Nearly 70% said they believed AI could meaningfully enhance investment strategies when paired with human expertise. Beyond the AI tool itself, Schwab has been building out resources focused on “How to Invest in AI” and offering thematic stock baskets containing up to 25 stocks per theme, with no access fees attached.
