S&P Global Ratings warns AI use will impact banks’ credit ratings

Credit ratings have long been shaped by familiar metrics: capital buffers, loan quality, revenue diversity, management competence. S&P Global Ratings just added a new variable to that list. The firm announced that banks’ adoption of artificial intelligence will increasingly factor into how it assesses their creditworthiness, a meaningful shift in how one of the world’s most influential ratings agencies thinks about financial institution risk. What S&P actually said The ratings agency’s September 2026 report ties credit outcomes directly to the maturity of a bank’s AI strategy and the strength of its governance frameworks around that technology. A bank deploying AI aggressively without adequate controls isn’t earning points with S&P — it’s accumulating risk. The report draws on a June 2026 survey of 179 global finance firms, which projects that AI-driven cost reductions will reach up to 4% in 2026, climbing to 6-8% by 2028.
