Real Madrid have made contact with Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie’s camp as the Spanish giants look to add a left-footed centre-back to their squad. The approach signals an emerging tug-of-war over one of South America’s most promising defensive talents, just as Arsenal prepares to make his loan deal permanent.
Hincapie, the 24-year-old Ecuadorian international, joined Arsenal on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen in September 2025. That deal includes a £45 million option to buy, which Arsenal is widely expected to trigger. Real Madrid, it seems, would prefer a different outcome.
What Real Madrid are planning
Initial discussions between Real Madrid and Hincapie’s representatives took place around June 22-23, 2026. The timing is notable: Arsenal hasn’t yet formally exercised the purchase option, leaving a narrow window for rival suitors to make their pitch.
Under manager Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid are pursuing a broader defensive overhaul ahead of next season. Hincapie’s versatility, capable of playing both centre-back and left-back, makes him an attractive target for a squad looking to add depth on the left side of defence.
Real Madrid’s interest reportedly extends beyond Hincapie alone. Reports have linked them to several other Arsenal defenders, including Riccardo Calafiori, suggesting Mourinho views the Gunners’ backline as something of a shopping catalogue.
Hincapie’s impact at Arsenal
Since arriving in north London, Hincapie has been a consistent presence in Mikel Arteta’s squad, contributing to Arsenal’s Premier League campaign and helping the club reach the UEFA Champions League final in his debut season.
He scored his first Arsenal goal in February 2026 and featured prominently in the Champions League knockout stages. For a defender still just 24, that kind of big-game experience at elite level is exactly what top clubs covet.
Born on January 9, 2002, Hincapie made his name at Bayer Leverkusen after joining the Bundesliga side in 2021. He developed into one of the most highly-regarded young defenders in European football, earning regular caps for Ecuador along the way.
What this means for all parties involved
Arsenal’s position is relatively strong here, at least on paper. They hold the purchase option from Bayer Leverkusen, meaning they can exercise it without needing Hincapie to agree to new terms with the German club. Once that option is triggered, Real Madrid would need to negotiate directly with Arsenal, and the Gunners would have zero obligation to sell.
The £45 million purchase option also sets an interesting benchmark. If Arsenal exercises it and Real Madrid then comes calling, the price would almost certainly increase. Arsenal would be under no pressure to accept what they paid, and a player who just helped them reach a Champions League final commands a premium on top of whatever the buying club originally negotiated.
For Bayer Leverkusen, this is largely out of their hands. If Arsenal triggers the option, the German club gets their £45 million and moves on. Any subsequent transfer to Real Madrid would be Arsenal’s business entirely.
