Pentagon launches Grok and ChatGPT for military use across 3 million personnel

The US Department of Defense just gave its workforce access to two of the most prominent AI chatbots on the planet. On August 31, the Pentagon announced that secure, military-grade versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok are now live on its GenAI.mil platform, available to more than 3 million DoD personnel for unclassified work. The tools are branded as ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, the latter delivered through Starshield AI. Both carry Impact Level 5 security accreditation, meaning they’re cleared to handle controlled unclassified information, the kind of sensitive-but-not-classified data that floods military bureaucracies every day. What GenAI.mil actually does GenAI.mil isn’t new. The Pentagon launched it on December 9, 2025, initially with Google’s Gemini as the backbone. The addition of ChatGPT and Grok makes it a multi-model enterprise platform, giving military users a choice of AI tools depending on the task at hand. The adoption numbers tell their own story. In roughly nine months since launch, GenAI.mil has attracted over 1.7 million unique users. That’s more than half of all DoD personnel.
