Sometimes the best stories in sports have nothing to do with what happens on the pitch. Orlando Gil, the 26-year-old Paraguayan goalkeeper who just stared down Germany in a penalty shootout and won, once sold his national team kit to help cover medical expenses for his premature-born son. The buyer has since offered to return it.
That’s the kind of detail that makes you pause. Here’s a guy who literally gave away the jersey representing his dream, only to earn a far bigger moment wearing the same colors on the world’s largest stage.
The shootout that shook the tournament
On June 30, 2026, Gil saved two penalties during a 4-3 shootout victory over Germany in the round of 32. The win pushed Paraguay into the round of 16, only the second time the South American nation has reached that stage in World Cup history. Gil earned FIFA Man of the Match honors for the performance.
Standing at 1.98 meters tall, roughly 6 feet 6 inches, Gil currently plays for San Lorenzo de Almagro in Argentina and carries an estimated market value of around 6 million euros. His senior international debut came on September 6, 2025. Paraguay named him to their World Cup squad on June 1, 2026.
The sacrifice behind the save
Gil’s son was born prematurely, and the medical bills that followed forced difficult choices. One of those choices was selling his Paraguay national team kit. After Gil’s heroics against Germany, the person who purchased the kit offered to give it back.
What this means for Paraguay and the beautiful game’s economics
Gil’s market value of approximately 6 million euros was set before this tournament. After saving two penalties against Germany in a World Cup knockout round, that number is almost certainly outdated. Breakout World Cup performances have historically been career-defining financial events for players.
