Optimism Foundation projects 343M OP to enter circulation by April 2027

The Optimism Foundation is getting ready to release another 343 million OP tokens into circulation between May 2026 and April 2027. That’s a meaningful chunk of new supply hitting the market, roughly equivalent to 15% of OP’s current circulating supply of approximately 2.286 billion tokens. The unlock math OP’s total supply sits at around 4.295 billion tokens. The current circulating supply of about 2.286 billion represents roughly 53% of that total, meaning nearly half of all OP tokens are still locked or reserved. The vesting schedule traces back to the token generation event in May 2022 and extends all the way through 2029. The next scheduled unlock, set for October 11, 2026, amounts to approximately 4.47 million OP, which represents just 0.21% of the already-released supply. The buyback counter-move Season 9 proposals introduced in January 2026 included a mechanism to deploy 50% of Superchain revenue toward OP token buybacks. The Superchain is Optimism’s broader vision of an interconnected network of Layer 2 chains all built on the OP Stack.
