Chloé Bakalar, OpenAI’s AI Ethics Lead, has left the company after a tenure of less than one year. She joined in August 2025, making her departure in mid-2026 yet another data point in what is becoming a very recognizable pattern at the world’s most closely watched AI company. A revolving door in safety and ethics Bakalar’s exit is not an isolated event. It sits within a broader wave of departures from OpenAI’s safety, ethics, and alignment teams stretching back to 2024. Since 2023 and 2024, around 50% of OpenAI’s safety researchers have left the company, often attributing their departures to a perceived deprioritization of safety amid rapid commercialization and frequent model releases. Johannes Heidecke, who led Safety Systems, left OpenAI in July 2026. Lilian Weng, a previous head of Safety Systems, also departed within the same general timeframe. The turnover has primarily affected members of the Superalignment team and various leadership figures responsible for safety systems.
