OpenAI reveals AI systems now perform 3x the research effort of its human staff

OpenAI just published data that should make every knowledge worker pause and recalibrate their career planning. As of mid-August 2026, the company’s AI agents are performing 3.1 agent-workdays for every single human workday inside OpenAI’s own research operation. The numbers behind the ratio The 3.1x figure represents a sharp acceleration from earlier in 2026, when AI assistance was described as far less prevalent in OpenAI’s research workflows. The company had set itself a goal in fall 2025 to deploy what it called an “automated research intern,” a system capable of tackling complex tasks that previously required skilled human researchers. By September 2026, OpenAI says it met that goal. August 2026 also set a record for the number of experiments conducted per active experimenter, the highest since tracking began in January 2025. The cost of running these agents is substantial. Median researchers at OpenAI are now incurring daily inference costs exceeding $600.
