OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated version of its flagship AI chatbot built specifically for users aged 13 to 17. The rollout, which went live globally on August 18, 2026, represents the company’s most significant move yet to address the increasingly complicated question of how young people should interact with generative AI. According to OpenAI, nearly 90% of teenagers already use ChatGPT weekly for educational purposes. What’s actually different for teen users ChatGPT for Teens ships with Study Mode, which walks students through problems step by step rather than serving up direct answers. Study Mode also includes break reminders and quiet hours functionality. The teen version deploys stricter content filters specifically calibrated to shield younger users from graphic violence, self-harm content, sexual material, and risky challenges. These filters sit on top of the standard safety protocols that apply to all ChatGPT users. The identification piece is handled by an age-prediction system that OpenAI first implemented in September 2025.
