OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, a startup developing AI powered smartphone camera technology, in a deal valuing the company at more than $300 million, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The transaction marks a sharp increase from Glass Imaging’s valuation of about $100 million in a funding round last year.
Glass Imaging develops imaging technology designed to use artificial intelligence to improve smartphone photos and produce image quality closer to that of DSLR cameras.
OpenAI has not disclosed how it plans to use the company or its technology following the acquisition.
The deal adds to a recent wave of acquisitions by OpenAI as the company expands beyond its core AI models and prepares for an expected initial public offering next year.
OpenAI has also acquired internet talk show TBPN and an open source developer tools startup in recent months.
