Norway just did something it hasn’t done since bell-bottoms were ironically cool. The Nordic nation of 5.6 million people advanced to the World Cup Round of 16, setting up a July 5 clash against Brazil at MetLife Stadium that carries the weight of 28 years of nostalgia.
For crypto markets, though, the real story isn’t on the pitch. It’s in the sponsorship deals, prediction markets, and NFT platforms that have turned the 2026 World Cup into the most blockchain-adjacent sporting event in history.
The match that stopped a country, twice
Norway defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 on June 30, with Erling Haaland burying the winning goal in the 86th minute. That result secured Norway’s first-ever World Cup knockout-stage victory and a date with Brazil, a team they’ve never lost to in four previous meetings. Two wins, two draws, zero defeats.
The last time these two sides met at a World Cup was 1998, when Norway pulled off a 2-1 upset in the group stage. That match, according to The Guardian, “stopped the country in its tracks” in a way no other sporting moment has for Norwegians.
Coach Ståle Solbakken’s squad has now surpassed what was previously considered Norway’s golden generation. The kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium.
Kraken, prediction markets, and football’s crypto layer
Kraken, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, is an official sponsor of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 2022 tournament in Qatar drew an estimated 5 billion cumulative viewers, making the World Cup one of the largest media events on the planet.
Platforms like Polymarket and Coinbase are running active markets on the Brazil vs. Norway match, allowing users to wager on outcomes ranging from final scores to individual player performances. Polymarket’s volumes surged during the 2024 US presidential election, and the World Cup appears to be providing the next major catalyst for user growth.
NFTs, meme tokens, and the Haaland effect
Sorare, the blockchain-based fantasy football platform, offers NFT player cards featuring Haaland. These cards function as both collectibles and game pieces within Sorare’s fantasy league ecosystem, giving holders utility beyond simple speculation.
An unofficial HAALAND meme token is currently trading on the Solana blockchain. It carries no formal endorsement from the player, Norway’s football association, or anyone with actual authority.
What this means for crypto investors
Kraken’s World Cup sponsorship represents a maturation point for the industry. After the collapse of FTX’s naming-rights deal with the Miami Heat arena, and the subsequent skepticism toward crypto-sports partnerships, Kraken’s involvement signals that established exchanges are willing to fill the credibility gap. Kraken has been operating since 2011.
Sorare’s model, where cards have in-game utility, has shown more durability than the pure-collectible NFT plays that cratered in 2022 and 2023.
